Fire Police Mission Statement

To protect life and property, preserve evidence and scenes, insure safe travel for motoring public in a courteous manner while protecting emergency personnel performing activities and investigations at incident scenes.

For more than thirty years, New Egypt Vol. Fire Co. No. 1 has had a Fire Police unit. The unit is made up of Active Firefighters, Retired Firefighters and non-Firefighters who wish to serve the community any way they can. Many people have asked, “What do Fire Police do?” Traffic and crowd control are our main responsibilities at an incident scene. We may also be called upon to assist the local police with road closures and parking at community events.

When responding to calls, Firefighters go to the Fire House, get their gear and ride on a Fire Truck to the scene. Fire Police carry their gear and respond to the scene in their personal vehicles. Upon arriving at a scene, we put our gear on and try to clear traffic for the arriving emergency personnel. In some cases we may close one lane of traffic and alternate traffic flow. Other times, for safety or investigation reasons, we will close a road completely and divert traffic. When diverting traffic we also become direction givers. Most people travel one road to and from their destination. They are lost if you change that route. We always try to detour traffic to the right. This allows the driver to be facing us to get directions. In most cases, it’s a simple left and left that will bring you back to the road you were on. Others times, there may be some additional directions.

Fire Police can be identified at an incident scene by the Hi-Visibility Yellow gear we wear. This gear includes jackets, vests, helmets, gloves and pants. Depending on the weather and durations of the call, not all of this gear may be worn. Other equipment carried by the Fire Police includes traffic cones, flares and flashlights. Our personal vehicles have Blue Lights and no special marking other than a Fire Police ID Plate on the front. There have been several attempts to have the current laws changed to allow Fire Police to have Red Lights and sirens.
